That sort of dialogue you describe is used a lot in movies, and I find it very annoying as well, if it's not done well. Years ago, I did read The Kiss and Other Stories, which are short stories, and I thought those were pretty good. On the other hand... I recently tried reading "The Black Monk" which is a novella, and haven't finished it yet. It is interesting but a bit odd.
