The Classics Club's CC Spin #26

Classics Club Spin is back! And about time too! After the usual hectic of the first four months of the year (not mentioning the two reading events that I'm hosting this year), I really need a refreshing kick to calm my nerve and to be back to my usual reading vigour.

What is CC Spin?

It’s easy. At your blog, before next Sunday 18th April, 2021, create a post that lists twenty books of your choice that remain “to be read” on your Classics Club list.

This is your Spin List.

You have to read one of these twenty books by the end of the spin period.

On Sunday 18th, April, we’ll post a number from 1 through 20. The challenge is to read whatever book falls under that number on your Spin List by the 31st May, 2021.

And here's my list:

1. My Antonia - Willa Cather
2. Return of the Native - Thomas Hardy
3. The Pilgrim's Progress - John Bunyan
4. Watership Down - Richard Adams
5. Cat's Cradle - Kurt Vonnegut
6. Elizabeth and Her German Garden - Elizabeth von Arnim
7. The Custom of the Country - Edith Wharton
8. Barchester Towers - Anthony Trollope
9. Eugenie Grandet - Honore de Balzac
10. I, Robot - Isaac Asimov
11. One of Ours - Willa Cather
12. My Cousin Rachel - Daphne du Maurier
13. The Red Badge of Courage - Stephen Crane
14. Casino Royale - Ian Fleming
15. Their Eyes Were Watching God - Zora Neale Hurston
16. The Crucible - Arthur Miller
17. The Imitation of Christ - Thomas A Kempis
18. The Scarlett Pimpernel - Baroness Orczy
19. Red Pony - John Steinbeck
20. Under the Net - Iris Murdoch

Some of the list are from my 2021 Reading Schedule. I will definitely read no. 1 in May anyway, so any number I'd get, I will read it alongside My Antonia. But if no. 1 gets picked, then I'm lucky! :)

Do you join CC Spin too? Is there any title you expect me to get, or is in your list too?

  1. So many great books on your list! I love My Antonia but One of Ours is also excellent. I also loved Their Eyes Were Watching God and Barchester Towers. Good luck with the spin!

    1. Thanks, Karen. So far I've read 3 of Cather's, and they're never disappointing.

  2. What a great list, Fanda! Lots to enjoy there, no matter which number comes up.

  3. Oh, Elizabeth and Her German Garden was just lovely. I do hope you get that one! Best of luck with the spin!

    1. Thanks, Cleo! I've heard a lot of praises on von Arnim, that I can't wait to read Elizabeth & Her German Garden. Plus the cover of my copy is sooo beautiful! <3

  4. I'm with Cleo. I reading Eliz and her German Garden last year - it's delightful. But then, Their Eyes Were Watching God was tremendous too...and My Cousin Rachel...and Watership Down and Eugenie Grandet.

On another note though, I'm struggling with my Zola - The Sin of Abbé Mouret is not grabbing me - help!!

    1. I know, Brona... I'd read something interesting, whichever number gets picked!

On The Sin of Abbe Mouret - I guess you're still on Part 1? It's full of "church" things, right? Zola can be annoying sometimes with his overzealous description of things. But wait until...ehm... the sin is or about to be committed, then it gets more interesting - oops!:P

This is not Zola's most gripping story, I agree. But I get to realize (on this 2nd read) that this book is the essence of Zola's Naturalism doctrine. If one wants to understand better about Zola's view on Naturalism (and his criticism on his beloved France), then this book might be the key.

  5. Ooooh, there are so many great books for you to look forward to. I've read #s 1, 3, 4 and 8, the last one is my absolute favourite. Enjoy.

    Here is my list.

    1. I know, Marianne. Sunday can't come faster, I'm all excited.

    2. Yup, sooooo looking forward to it.

  6. We have Eugénie Grandet and My cousin Rachel in common, and there are other novels I read and loved, I hope you do so too :)

    1. I'm also excited to read My Cousin Rachel, this would be my 2nd du Maurier's. I have read Rebecca, and loved it.

  7. I've got One of Ours on my list, too, but I put it in a different spot. Of the ones I've read on your list I think My Antonia or The Custom of the Country are my favorites, but they all look good!

    1. Thanks Reese! I hope you gets One of Ours, so we will both be reading Cather's (I plan to read My Antonia anyway). :)

  8. I loved Watership Down, and Under the Net was quite good too. Enjoy!

    1. You know, this is the 3rd or maybe 4th CC Spin where I've been listing Under the Net. This time might be it! ;)

  9. We have one book in common on our list, and it's the book I most want to read...Elizabeth and Her German Garden.

What do you think?
