The House on the Strand (1969) by Daphne du Maurier

🧪 Richard Young has befriended Magnus Lane since university. He often stayed with the Lanes on holidays at Kilmarth, an ancient house near the Cornish coast. Magnus Lane is now a scientist, a chemical researcher or biophysicist at the University of London, and Richard, or Dick, has often been his guinea pig. Magnus has a laboratory in his house, and here he is perfecting a special concoction, which Dick has agreed to test, while staying at Kilmarth with his (Dick's) family during summer holiday. Dick's wife, Vita, and his two stepsons are still a week or so from joining him at Kilmarth, so he has ample time to do with the potion, or you may call it drug.

🧪 The potion brings him to the past, in fourteenth century to be precise, when the house was called Kilmerth. Yes, this is a time-travelling story. The place is the same, but the landscape has changed after six century. Dick soon becomes drawn into the people's lives and affairs, though they can't see him. There is a set back though, he'd get severe vertigo and nausea if he touch them. The man who stayed at Kilmerth (the same house, but humbler at that time) was Roger, a steward to Sir Henry Champernoune. And it is this man that Dick follows everytime he drinks the potion. His fascination is centered on the faith of Isolda, a beautiful woman and wife of Sir Oliver Carminowe, but who had had a secret affair with the brother of Sir Henry's wife, Otto Bodrugan. During these time-travels, Dick wanders around the landscape, often ends up quite a distance from where he's been taking the potion.
🧪 So drawn is Dick to the past, that his present is gradually fading. It's more and more difficult to focus on things he needs to do, and this secret also puts a barrier in his marriage life, when Vita and the boys finally join him at Kilmarth. But now that Magnus will be staying at Kilmarth for the weekend, they would have fun adventures together - or so Dick thought. Unfortunately, something terrible happens, that thwarted this excitement, and Dick is left with two choices: stop the test all together and return to his own life, or continue secretly the time-travelling to the past on his own, with its consequences.

🧪 As is usual with all of du Maurier's, this one is also a gripping story about the addiction to another life when ones' own is less eventful and stuck in a place one doesn't want to be. I think in Dick's case, he feels like a stranger when he's with Vita and the boys - the boys being only step sons. However, instead of trying to find a solution, he prefers to be out of that life and pursue another which is more engaging. We do that a lot, but with books. When one's tired of one's life, one can always be out of reality for a few hours at a time, and drawn in a good and engaging story of another life. But one must return to reality and deal with it anyway in the end. I believe that's the moral background that du Maurier wanted to highlight with her inconclusive ending. Nevertheless, this is an engaging gothic/science fiction story with a touch of historical theme. Not of du Maurier's best, perhaps, but still is fun to read.

🗼 Science fiction is never my cup-of-tea, but from time to time I would read one that's interested me. I have bought a copy of The Martian solely because I have watched the movie - and quite liked it. Now I read it for year 2011 of my A Century of Books project. And it's not disappointing!

🗼 The story was told from Mark Watney's perspective. He's one of six NASA astronauts who were sent to Mars to collect samples. Each of them has unique expertise, and Mark's are botanist and engineer. One day during their works, a severe dust storm occurred, caused them to frantically returned to the hub, but Watney. He was injured, and since the other crew couldn't found his location, and thought him dead, in the crucial moment, they left Mars without him. But Mark Watney wasn't dead - he's alive and uninjured! For now at least, but how would he survive in Mars, alone, with limited quantity of food and supplies, and - with the communication tools dead thanks to the storm - without a way to communicate to Earth that he's alive?

🗼 And so, the heroic, relentless, and grueling efforts of Mark Watney to survive begins, the essence of this remarkable book. His ingenuity - farming potato in Mars, for instance - and his MacGyver-ish capability of quick thinking and assembly stuffs from limited equipment are wonderful. But most of all, is his determination to never quit. I think his huge courage helps - when one is not hampered by the scare of death, one could think more clearly, and decision making in every step would be much easier. That's my opinion , at least. I admired how Watney is always able to decide the next most crucial task he has to tackle first, after an assessment post incident. There are a lot of things to do, but he's never daunted by this. One thing at a time, is always his approach. The possibility of death is so huge, but he doggedly thinks and works to survive - at least for the present. 

 🗼 The Martian is not only a science fiction, with tons of scientific and technical jargons which, though I only understand perhaps 20% of it, still was entertaining. But the message behind Mark Watney's struggle of surviving is the most important element of this book: the beauty of humanity at work. The save-Mark-Watney project turned out to be, not only national, but international, interest. Though I doubt it will happen in reality, but I was really touched by this united warm humanity showed all over the world. This made the book awesome - not mentioning the dry and sarcastic humour showed by Watney; kudos to Andy Weir to draw the character so deeply!

🗼 Even when I don't really care much for science fiction, there's a priceless lesson to be drawn from this book: how to not succumb to desperation. Everytime I were in desperation, I'd remember Watney's attitude. He'd go from swearing, whining, then quickly to his optimist self once more. Like in this scene, right after something goes awry:

"Just once I'd like something to go as planned, ya know?...."

But then 3 sentence later...

"Okay, enough self-pity. I'm not doomed. Things will just be harder than planned."

Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne

This was my third encounter of Jules Verne. My favorite remains 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, followed by Around the World in Eighty Days. I felt that Journey to the Center of the Earth is too short; it ended too abruptly. There should have been more room for Verne to expand the story; at least to dig deeper the emotional side of the characters.

The story is told from Axel's point of view. He is the nephew of Prof. Otto Lidenbrock, a German savant (a distinguished scientist) specializing in mineralogy. Axel himself is also a scientist--geology is his specialty, and has a great interest in his uncle's field. One day Prof. Lidenbrock bought an old runic manuscript, inside which Axel found a cryptic runic script written by a 16th century savant called Arne Saknussem. He claimed that he has travelled to, and found, the center of the Earth; and encouraged others to go and follow his steps through a volcanic tube inside crater of Snäfell in Iceland. The exact entrance would be pointed by the shadow of Scartaris mountain peak, at noon, by the end of June. So, off went Lidenbrock and Axel to Iceland; hired a Danish eiderdown hunter called Hans; and soon the three began what must have been the most dangerous journey men have ever taken to the center of the earth.

Of the three, Lidenbrock was the most enthusiastic traveler; while Axel the most reluctant (quite understandable as he was a young man who just fell in love with a lovely girl). Hans was indifferent, silent, but practical, as was usual for hunter.

The journey proved to be full of suspense and wonder. Down the Snäfell crater they descended a kind of steep-sided well (jökull--or volcano tube), about 2000 feet to the bowel of the Earth. Amazingly there they found a subterranean river flowed on the underground cavern with granite walls and roof. But the journey was not all wonder and comfort; at one point Axel was separated from the others and got lost in the labyrinth of the cavern. When all hope was lost, another wonder happened. A strange acoustic effect has enabled Axel and Lidenbrock to communicate from far distance, without which Axel would have been dead.

Resuming the journey, they then met another wonder: a huge subterranean Sea, off which they embarked by a raft made by Hans. During the sail they also met and escaped giant prehistoric sea monsters; found a large geyser in the middle of the Sea; then hit by a terrible storm that lasted for days and which finally wrecked their raft.

Stranded on an island, they continue the journey by foot along the coastline, where they found a prehistoric forest full of mastodons, giant birds, and even giant men—underworld civilization totally hidden, unknown, and untouched by the upperworld! This passage really felt like watching Jurassic Park! But the last stage of their journey was the most deathly, and, for us readers, the most thrilling!

Through all the excitement of scientific discoveries and the fearful or painful perils, Verne also slipped every now and then the emotional touch of humanity, like how Lidenbrock turned compassionate and tender to his dear nephew when Axel was weak after his lost. However, as I said before, I felt that Verne could have dug this field still deeper. Anyway, Journey to the Center of the Earth was written in the form of a scientific journal; so maybe it is was the perfect way anyway to weave the story.

60.000 Mil Di Bawah Laut

Atas nama ilmu pengetahuan, kupikir sangat tepatlah kalau aku bilang bahwa buku ini merupakan salah satu buku wajib baca hingga kapanpun! Kalau buku dikatakan sebagai kendaraan kita untuk menapaki imajinasi kita yang paling liar, maka buku ini adalah buktinya. Jangan salah menebak genre buku ini dari judulnya, karena buku ini bukanlah sebuah jurnal kelautan, meski mereka yang tertarik pada ilmu kelautan pasti mendapati banyak keasyikan di buku ini. Buku ini adalah sebuah fiksi yang dibaurkan dengan ilmu pengetahuan. Jules Verne berhasil menuangkan imajinasinya yang hebat ke buku ini dan mengajak kita berpetualang bersamanya.

Pada sekitar tahun 1866 terjadilah fenomena menggemparkan di lautan seluruh dunia tentang munculnya sesosok makhluk yang sangat besar, yang mampu berenang dengan kecepatan tinggi, badannya sangat keras sehingga tak mempan oleh senjata, namun sangat besar kemampuannya melubangi lambung kapal layar hingga membuatnya tenggelam. Banyak insiden terjadi di beberapa laut, dan seperti biasanya, cerita maupun legenda itu lalu menjadi puluhan versi yang simpang siur dan akhirnya diragukan orang sebagai suatu fakta.

Adalah seorang ilmuwan kelautan bernama Profesor Aronnax dari Prancis yang mendapatkan kesempatan emas untuk turut serta berlayar dengan kapal Abraham Lincoln yang berbendera Amerika Serikat. Kapal ini membawa misi besar: menemukan dan menghabisi monster laut yang telah menjadi momok di lautan dan meresahkan semua negara, yang saat itu dijuluki dengan: Narwhal. Aronnax didampingi oleh asistennya yang setia dan berkarakter tenang dan sopan: Conseil. Tokoh ketiga adalah Ned Land, orang Kanada yang terkenal sebagai pembunuh ikan paus dengan senjata harpun (semacam tombak) yang paling ulung. Ia turut serta karena monster laut itu diperkirakan sejenis mamalia berkulit keras yang dalam dunia sains disebut cetacean.

Abraham Lincoln memang akhirnya "bertemu" dengan monster laut itu, namun 100% meleset dugaan semua orang, si cetacean raksasa itu ternyata bukanlah mamalia, melainkan sebuah kapal selam!

Sayangnya, atau dalam beberapa hal boleh dibilang untungnya, fakta itu terungkap setelah Aronnax, Conseil dan Ned Land terlempar dari Abraham Lincoln pada saat mereka sedang menyerang si kapal selam. Mereka bertiga terlempar ke laut, dan akhirnya ditolong oleh si kapal selam yang dijuluki Nautilus, milik seseorang misterius bernama Kapten Nemo.

Nautilus adalah kapal selam misterius. Bukan milik pemerintah negara manapun, namun milik Kapten Nemo pribadi. Siapakah sosok Kapten Nemo sendiri terselubung kabut pekat misteri yang hanya terkuak sedikit di akhir kisah. Yang jelas, Kapten Nemo telah membangun sebuah kapal selam berteknologi super canggih yang memungkinkan ia serta awak kapalnya tak perlu menginjakkan kaki lagi untuk selamanya di daratan. Ya! Nautilus dibangun untuk menjadi rumah mereka semua di lautan yang luas ini, di mana tak ada hukum yang dapat menghalangi kebebasan mereka. Kita tahu bahwa dua pertiga (atau 70%) bumi ini merupakan lautan. Jadi, bayangkan saja anda memiliki tempat tinggal di mana tak ada manusia lainnya yang hidup di sana. Anda akan menjadi penguasa mutlak lautan yang begitu luasnya...70% dari seluruh dunia!

Pertanyaan kita mungkin, bagaimana dengan sarana terpenting penunjang hidup manusia: udara? Kapten Nemo telah memikirkan semuanya, yaitu dengan mekanisme untuk menyedot oksigen ketika Nautilus naik ke permukaan laut, lalu mengolah oksigen itu secara kimiawi untuk bisa disimpan selama beberapa hari ke depan sebelum jadwal Nautilus untuk "menarik napas" lagi. Sedangkan untuk air dan makanan, tentu saja sumber daya yang ada di lautan luas takkan pernah habis untuk diserap dan dikelola untuk menghidupi seluruh awak kapal. Bahan bakar? Laut pun menyediakan bahan berlimpah untuk menciptakan listrik yang menghasilkan panas, cahaya dan gerak. Alam telah melengkapi air laut dengan bahan-bahan yang dibutuhkan untuk diolah menjadi listrik. Tapi bagaimana dengan aspek-aspek hidup manusia lainnya? Kita kan hidup tak hanya bernapas, makan dan minum secukupnya? Dalam hal itu, lautan ternyata telah menyediakan semuanya. Kalau anda membayangkan betapa bosannya kalau dari ke hari makan ikan bakar terus, ternyata menu hidangan di Nautilus cukup beragam loh. Para penumpang tetap bisa menikmati daging, berupa irisan tipis daging kura-kura, hati lumba-lumba yang mirip babi cincang, dilengkapi acar timun-laut, lalu krim dari susu yang diolah dari hewan-hewan cetacean. Gulanya diolah dari rumput laut, sedang selainya dibuat dari anemone (yang tidak dijelaskan itu hewan atau tumbuhan apa...). Bahkan, buat yang biasa merokok setelah makan, kru Nautilus telah mengolah dedaunan tertentu menjadi rokok. Lumayan mungkin ya, hidup di bawah laut itu?

Lalu untuk hiburannya? Jangan khawatir, Tuhan Sang Pencipta Alam Semesta ini sendirilah yang telah menyediakan atraksi-atraksi yang akan selalu membuat manusia ternganga kagum dan terpesona pada keindahannya. Dari tujuh bulan petualangan Aronnax dkk bersama Nautilus, tak pernah mereka bosan menonton kekayaan dan keindahan makhluk-makhluk laut yang beraneka ragam mewarnai dan memenuhi dasar laut itu, dengan spesies unik di setiap daerahnya. Khusus untuk Aronnax dan Conseil, tentu saja tak hanya menghibur, kekayaan laut itu juga menjadi kesibukan mereka sebagai ilmuwan. Aronnax pun menyusun semacam jurnal yang kelak akan berguna bagi ilmu pengetahuan, karena belum ada, hingga saat itu, seorang manusia pun yang pernah pergi sedalam mereka di dasar laut. Nautilus memang dirancang mampu menahan tekanan di dasar laut, dan sosoknya yang panjang ramping memungkinkannya untuk menelusuri lorong-lorong sempit di antara karang bahkan bongkahan es!

Ngomong-ngomong tentang es, Nautilus sempat mengalami petualangan yang amat mendebarkan, bahkan nyaris membawa seluruh penumpangnya ke kematian ketika sedang menyelam di kutub selatan, Lautan Antartika. Saat itu Nautilus sedang meluncur di celah-celah antara bongkahan es, demi menjadi yang pertama dari umat manusia yang mampu mencapai titik kutub selatan bumi. Namun keberuntungan tak selalu bersama mereka, pada suatu titik di mana temperatur menjadi sangat dingin, Nautilus akhirnya terjebak di antara es setebal belasan meter, tak mampu memecah es itu dengan tombak-tombaknya karena begitu dipecah sedikit, es akan langsung membeku lagi saking dinginnya! Padahal Nautilus butuh naik ke permukaan untuk menghirup udara segar. Saat itu Aronnax dkk sudah hampir menyerah pada nasib, ketika Kapten Nemo dengan ketenangannya berhasil membawa mereka keluar dari perangkap.

Itu adalah salah satu pengalaman menakutkan mereka, namun di banyak kesempatan-kesempatan lain Kapten Nemo mengajak mereka melakukan hal-hal asyik yang biasa dilakukan di darat, seperti jalan-jalan sambil berburu. Ya, dengan mengenakan pakaian selam Aronnax dkk diajak untuk berburu di hutan belantara lautan. Asyik ya? Lalu, ketika ada awak Nautilus yang meninggal, mereka juga melakukan upacara penguburan di sebuah tanah lapang di dasar laut.

Yang lebih menarik lagi, mereka juga sempat menjadi saksi kebenaran legenda benua yang hilang: Atlantis. Ya, mereka menemukan tempat di mana reruntuhan kota yang konon pernah berdiri dengan megahnya itu di dasar laut, dan menyaksikan sesuatu yang belum pernah dilihat siapapun di bumi ini, sekaligus membuktikan bahwa Atlantis memang pernah ada. Rasanya khusyuk banget suasana saat itu, yang dengan apik dituangkan dalam tulisan oleh Jules Verne. Kejadian seru yang juga menarik untuk kita, adalah ketika mereka sempat berlabuh di pantai Papua dan bertemu dengan orang-orang Papua. Bayangkan, orang Papua jaman itu yang masih primitif melihat sosok Nautilus yang bak ikan paus berkulit besi! Lucu juga bagian ini...

Masih banyak pengalaman-pengalaman seru maupun menakjubkan lainnya seperti melihat hamparan ribuan organisme mikroskopik yang bersinar terang dalam gelapnya dasar laut. Wow...membayangkannya saja sudah membuatku merinding. Bayangkan, mengambang dalam terang yang berasal dari alam, dan semua itu berasal dari organisme yang sangat kecil, namun karena jumlahnya mungkin jutaan sehingga membentuk semacam hamparan terang hingga bermil-mil jauhnya. Begitu hebatnya alam yang diciptakan oleh Tuhan, membuat kita pun menahan napas bersama dengan mereka yang ada di Nautilus.

Entah mengapa, aku suka sekali membaca atau menonton tentang kapal, khususnya kapal selam (padahal aku gak bisa berenang..). Mungkin karena dunia bawah laut yang indah dan (tampak) damai itu yang menarikku. Tapi mungkin juga karena kehebatan alam selalu membuatku mengalami sentuhan Sang Penciptanya dalam hidupku. Kalau anda pernah ke Sea World dan melihat makhluk-makhluk laut lewat kaca di sekeliling anda berdiri, seperti itu kira-kira pemandangan lewat jendela-jendela kaca di ruang duduk Nautilus ketika panelnya dibuka. Mungkin itu adalah sensasi paling hebat yang akan aku rasakan andai Nautilus itu nyata...

Pendek kata, aku sangat terhibur sekaligus tersentuh membaca buku ini. Terutama karena karakter Kapten Nemo yang amat kuat, yang terasa sekali menjadi roh buku ini. Tak mungkin kita menutup buku ini tanpa merasa tersentuh. Kapten Nemo adalah orang yang menjadi getir karena dikecewakan dunia. Ada dua kutub kepribadian dalam diri Kapten Nemo. Ia orang yang berhati dingin, nyaris tanpa emosi dan bisa menjadi sangat kejam ketika ingin membalas dendam. Namun di waktu lain, ia begitu lembut hati hingga kematian salah seorang awak kapalnya dapat membuat ia menangis dan berduka selama beberapa hari. Di satu sisi ia tak manusiawi dengan menahan Aronnax dkk di Nautilus seumur hidup tanpa boleh keluar lagi dari sana (karena takut mereka membocorkan rahasia Nautilus), namun di sisi lain ia sangat peka pada sesamanya terutama yang tertindas. Secara keseluruhan, Kapten Nemo akan mempengaruhi anda dengan karakternya yang unik, juga dengan hasil karyanya yang mengagumkan: Nautilus.

Rasanya kita harus mengucapkan terima kasih pada penerbit Elex yang telah menerjemahkan novel klasik ini sehingga bisa kita nikmati. Namun sayangnya, ada terlalu banyak typo di buku ini yang agak mengganggu. Terjemahannya pun kadang terasa kaku dan aneh. Justru karena alur cerita agak datar dan banyak diselingi fakta ilmiah, maka terjemahannya aku harapkan lebih "ceria" dan tidak terlalu formal agar kita membacanya lebih enak. Bagaimana pun juga, buku ini tetap sayang untuk dilewatkan. Kisah fiksi memang sangat banyak, tapi jarang ada yang mengungkapkan keagungan alam dalam sebuah buku kan?
