Literary Movement Reading Challenge 2015 – October: Modernism (1910 – 1965)

Modernism is characterized by a self-conscious break with traditional styles of poetry and verse. In English literature, Modernist Period was first and foremost a visceral reaction against the Victorian culture and aesthetic. The stability and quietude of Victorian civilization were rapidly becoming a thing of the past. The assassination of Archduke Ferdinand of Austria was essentially the triggering event of the First World War, a conflict which swept away all preconceived notions about the nature of so-called modern warfare. Modernists experimented with literary form and expression. This movement was driven by a conscious desire to overturn traditional modes of representation and express the new sensibilities of their time. [Source 1] [Source 2]
